Bruner · vs Study Mode

A mode is not a system.

Study Mode asks before it tells — for a single session. What it doesn’t have is everything around the session: the syllabus, the memory of what you’ve mastered, the review schedule, the finish line.

Study Mode

ChatGPT's guided-learning mode. Asks you questions instead of answering — inside one chat session, on every plan, for free.

Bruner

A full course around the dialogue: syllabus from your goal, mastery tracking, FSRS reviews, and a capstone you ship.

Verdict

Study Mode for tonight's concept. Bruner for the skill you want to have in six months.

Honest verdict

Pick Study Mode for one job. Pick Bruner for the other.

Study Mode is the right tool when

  • You want a guided walkthrough of one concept, right now, for free.
  • You're already living in ChatGPT and want a better way to ask it things.
  • You need homework-style practice tonight, not a program.
  • You'd rather have zero structure than any commitment.

Bruner is the right tool when

  • Your goal takes months, and tonight-you keeps overwriting last-week-you.
  • You want reviews to arrive on schedule — not when you remember to ask.
  • You want the course grounded in real sources with citations, not freestyle.
  • You want a finish line: a capstone that proves the learning landed.

The one-tap problem

A mode you can leave isn't a commitment.

Study Mode’s discipline is optional by design. The moment the struggle gets real — the exact moment learning happens — the answer machine is one tap away, in the same window, with no friction. OpenAI can’t fix that without breaking what ChatGPT is for.

That matters because the cost of taking the smooth path is measurable: students practicing with unrestricted ChatGPT looked 48% better during practice and scored 17% worse when the AI was taken away (Bastani et al., PNAS 2025).

Bruner doesn’t have an answer mode to fall back to. The tutor asks, hints, and reviews — and the exercises stay yours to solve. The commitment is the product.

Where the struggle goes

Study Mode

“What do you think the first step is?”

→ Stuck? Tap out of Study Mode, ask normally, paste the answer. Session over.

Bruner

“What do you think the first step is?”

→ Stuck? You get a hint, then a smaller question. The answer stays yours to find.

Preferences aren't mastery

Knowing how you learn isn't knowing what you know.

Study Mode adapts to you — it remembers that you like real-world examples and shorter sessions, and carries chat memory between conversations. As of 2026 it’s available on every ChatGPT plan.

But adapting the style of teaching is not a model of your knowledge. It can’t tell you which of the forty concepts in your goal you’ve demonstrated, which are shaky, and which one is due for review this morning before it slips.

That state — concept-level mastery plus an FSRS clock per concept — is Bruner’s core data structure, not chat history. It’s what turns “we talked about this once” into “you still know this in March.”

What each one remembers

Common objections

Isn't Study Mode already Socratic tutoring?

Within a single session — yes. It asks what you know, nudges instead of telling, checks understanding. What it isn't is a course: there's no syllabus toward your goal, no record of which concepts you've mastered, no review scheduled for the day you'd forget, and no endpoint that says you're done. Bruner is the system around the session.

Study Mode remembers me now — isn't that the memory problem solved?

It remembers preferences — that you like real-world examples, or shorter sessions. Useful, but it's personalization, not a learning model. Bruner tracks something different: which concepts you've demonstrated, how strongly, and when each one is due for review. Knowing how you like to be taught isn't the same as knowing what you know.

It's free on every plan. Why would I pay for Bruner?

A free guided walkthrough of tonight's concept — that's Study Mode's job. Bruner's is the part that makes learning stick across months: the researched syllabus, the mastery tracking, the FSRS review queue, the capstone. That infrastructure is the difference between a good session and a finished skill.

Can I use both?

Sure. Plenty of learners keep ChatGPT open for one-off questions while running their actual course in Bruner. The tools compete less than you'd think: one is a mode inside a chat app, the other is a course with a chat inside it.
