Bruner · vs Khan Academy

Like Khan Academy, but for what you actually want to learn.

Khan teaches the standard K–12 curriculum on video. Bruner teaches your topic in conversation, on your time, with reviews scheduled to your actual memory and exercises that change every time you see them. If you're past algebra and ready to learn something specific, you've outgrown Khan whether you've noticed or not.

Khan Academy

K–12-shaped. Video lectures, templated practice problems, mastery tracked against a fixed standardized curriculum.

Bruner

Your topic, taught in conversation. Course built backward from what you want to ship; exercises change every review.

Verdict

Use Khan if your topic is in their catalog and you're working toward a standard outcome. Use Bruner for everything else.

Honest verdict

Pick Khan Academy for one job. Pick Bruner for the other.

Khan Academy is the right tool when

  • You're a K-12 student or prepping for a standardized exam — SAT, MCAT, AP. Khan's tracks for these are well-curated.
  • Cost is the deciding factor and your topic is on Khan. It's free, donor-supported, and excellent.
  • Your subject is in Khan's catalog and you're working toward a standard outcome.
  • You learn well from video lectures and have the discipline to follow through.

Bruner is the right tool when

  • Your topic isn't on Khan — niche professional skills, certifications, frameworks Khan hasn't gotten to.
  • You want to bring your own materials — your professor's slides, the playbook your team uses, the textbook you actually have.
  • You'd rather think your way to the answer than watch someone explain it on video.
  • You want a real shippable capstone — an app, a brief, a defended thesis — not a unit-completion checkbox.

Any topic, any sources

Khan can't build you a course on game development. Bruner can.

Khan teaches a fixed (large) catalog of pre-built subjects. If your topic is on the list, fine. If it isn’t — the framework you’re trying to learn, the certification you’re studying for, the niche professional skill, the new technical topic Khan hasn’t gotten to yet — you’re out of luck.

Bruner researches your topic at creation time (current docs, leading programs, canonical books), and you can also bring your own materials: your professor’s slides, the playbook your team uses, the textbook you actually have. The course gets built around your sources, not pulled off a shelf.

Same prompt · two outcomes

Khan · “teach me game development”

Khan’s CS track has some intro JS exercises that touch on game-like simulations. No real game-dev course — nothing on Unity, Unreal, or engine architecture.

Bruner · “teach me game development”

Researches the field (Unity & Unreal docs, Game Programming Patterns, recent GDC talks), checks your background, builds backward from a small playable game you’ll build.

Reviews that adapt — and can't be cheesed

Exercise cards regenerate fresh problems. Reviews land right before you'd forget.

Bruner makes things stick through a stack, not one algorithm. The conversation forces you to articulate every concept in your own words. The capstone forces you to use them on something specific. On top of that, FSRS schedules each concept to come back at the moment your memory predicts you’d otherwise lose it.

Khan has practice problems, but they’re templated — same patterns, different numbers — and the scheduling is a basic mastery heuristic, not real spaced retrieval. Bruner’s exercise cards generate fresh problems each time: tap a card tagged “recursion practice” and you get a problem you’ve never seen before.

There’s no card to memorize, no template to recognize. You either understand the concept or you don’t.

One card tag · three reviews

Day 6

Implement a recursive `fibonacci(n)` — what's the base case?

Day 14

Walk a binary tree with recursion. Why does the call stack matter here?

Day 30

Refactor this iterative loop into a tail-recursive form. What goes wrong if you don't?

Same concept (recursion). New problem each review.

Common objections

I'm learning algebra / Python basics / chemistry. Khan is free — why pay for Bruner?

Don't, in that case. Khan Academy's coverage of K-12 and intro college subjects is the best free resource on the internet. We mean that. Bruner is for the topics Khan doesn't teach — niche professional skills, certifications, the new technical topic Khan hasn't gotten to yet — and for learners who need their own materials integrated.

What about Khanmigo, Khan's AI tutor?

Khanmigo is a chat layer added on top of Khan's video workflow — a great helper inside the K-12 catalog, but not a replacement for the videos. Bruner is built differently: instead of a helper inside a fixed catalog, the whole course is generated from your goal and your sources. No catalog wall to bump into, no videos to nod through.

Can I learn Khan-style subjects (math, physics) on Bruner?

Yes — and you can upload your textbook or class notes as the source. But honestly, if you're learning what Khan already covers and have no specific reason to use Bruner, Khan is free and excellent. Pick the right tool.

When does Khan actually beat Bruner?

Two cases. (1) K-12 students and standardized exam prep — SAT, MCAT, AP — Khan has dedicated tracks for these and they're well-curated. (2) When cost is the deciding factor. Khan is free; Bruner is paid. If your topic is on Khan and price matters, we'd rather you actually learn the thing than pay us when you didn't have to.

For when the topic isn't in anyone's catalog.
